Brief Comment On The Chinese Coronavirus- Quito, Ecuador 05 FEB 20/20

Wednesday, 05 FEB 20/20-  👀 'Clear Vision'
Brief Comment On The Chinese Coronavirus-

By my good neighbor down here in ECUADOR- Dr. Richard Sauder Phd. - dr.samizdat1618@gmail.com
-"The financial press is reporting that Chinese oil demand has fallen by 3 million barrels per day, or a whopping 20%, over the last month. Please see:

https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/news/oil-prices-coronavirus-slip-year-low-china-demand-falls-20-2020-2-1028868536

If Chinese oil demand continues to be depressed by 20%, or slips even more, that will be a major shock to world commerce. The drop in oil demand is a fair proxy measure for declining Chinese industrial and economic productivity. China is the global factory.  If Chinese production fails for an extended period, then that will adversely affect other countries that rely on Chinese exports. Just for one example, China manufactures auto parts for export to manufacturers in other countries. If Chinese auto parts exports fail, then production lines in other countries will have to shut down, for want of parts.

If the Coronavirus crisis in China  continues, it will be a very heavy body blow to the world economy. Here in Ecuador, where I live, the stores, show rooms and markets are full of Chinese merchandise and products of every description: shoes, children's toys,  silverware, knives, hand tools, car parts, automobiles, trucks, plastic squeeze bottles for mustard and ketchup, coffee cups, glasses and plates, green tea,  and on and on, everything from A to Z.  Take 20% of that away, or more, and commerce in Ecuador will take a huge hit, with major implications for the national economy, employment, and business viability. Given the huge role that China plays in global commerce Ecuador would surely not be the only country to be adversely affected.

It all depends on the duration of the crisis in China. If everything suddenly gets much better tomorrow, then things can soon be back to normal. However, if the crisis persists for months, with major cities shut down and under quarantine, and Chinese industrial production and economic activity severely hampered, as is the case today, then the global effects will be wide ranging. The world will be rocked.

I don't know exactly what is going on in China. But I am not among those who are saying that this virus outbreak is nothing worse than an influenza epidemic. It is clearly a very grave matter, judging by the extreme reaction of the Chinese government.

Please see the following Twitter report:

https://twitter.com/ASBreakingNews/status/1225059257718099969

Look at the spraying being done in the street in Wuhan by the crew in Moon suits.  It looks serious to me.

For all we know, this crisis is just beginning.

For those who have wondered what The Event Horizon (the topic of this blog) would look like,  the initial phase is starting to come into partial focus, and it ain't pretty.

It is beginning with a terrible plague. If the plague worsens there will be numerous secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary and senary effects, all over the world, quite apart from the plague itself, which is more than bad enough." -

MON Dec. 16, 2019- Is Palo Santo Endangered?

No, but, you should probably reconsider how you are using it.
"Palo santo — the aromatic wood that has been used for traditional healing and in spiritual ceremonies in indigenous and mestizo Latin American cultures for centuries — has seen a growth in commercial popularity alongside concerns about its conservation status.

Its popularity within the mainstream self-care community is driven by its warm scent when burned as an incense and oblique promises to clear a space of “bad vibes.” Memes portraying palo santo as being a couple packs of incense away from extinction are prolific. Some even claim there are only 250 trees left. The reality isn’t quite so grim but is certainly complicated.
What, exactly, is palo santo?

The tree species being used in the wellness world is called bursera graveolens, which grows all over the Americas including Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Galápagos Islands and plentifully in mainland Ecuador. To get palo santo of the best quality, the wood must be harvested in a certain way.

“They come to a ripe age at 50 to 70 years old. That’s relatively short. Once the tree dies of natural causes, it has to be left for a minimum of five to eight years for the oils in the heartwood to mature enough to make quality incense,” said Jonathon Miller Weisberger an ethnobotanist and author of “Rainforest Medicine: Preserving Indigenous Science and Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon..”

That fallen, aged wood is then processed into sticks used as incense. Watch out for synthetic palo santo, where chemicals are used to produce the signature palo santo scent. We don’t know how much is out there, but read the fine print on packaging. It will typically say “synthetic.”
Is palo santo endangered?

Palo santo is not endangered. This month, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the first time released a review of bursera graveolens’s conservation status and declared it “of least concern.”

So why the confusion?

A few factors are at play. The first: a case of mistaken identity. A totally different species, bulnesia sarmientoi, is also commonly known as “palo santo” and grows in the Gran Chaco region of South America. Its dark, mahogany-lookalike wood is used for its essential oils and in making products like furniture. And that tree is in fact threatened and may be confused with bursera graveolens when people are researching the topic online.

There’s also the matter of regional versus international status. The IUCN which has declared bursera graveolens of least concern takes global populations of a species into consideration when making its assessment. But national governments determine a plant’s regional conservation status, meaning a plant can be listed as endangered in one country and not another. The online rumors may date back to 2005, when Peru listed its palo santo as endangered.

What is palo santo good for?

Palo santo has a sweet yet complex scent. Its essential oil is used in consumer products, like shampoo, perfume and soap for fragrance. Palo santo sticks are burned as a sacred tool in spiritual ceremonies like smudging, which has varying purposes but is commonly said to cleanse negative energy. These practices have their roots in indigenous cultures, but palo santo is used in Catholic religious ceremonies in Latin America, too.
Can I go back to doing my palo santo thing then?

Not without some thought. Though palo santo isn’t endangered, its habitat, tropical dry forest is threatened. “Dry tropical forest have been decimated. Estimates are that only five to ten percent of dry tropical forests are still intact around the world,”

said Susan Leopold, Ph.D., and the executive director of United Plant Savers, a conservation organization. She said that because dry tropical forests have a dry period (unlike rain forests) they are hospitable to human activity. People can go in and log or clear forests to use the land for something else, like cattle ranching.

According to Mr. Miller Weisberger, the most abundant populations of palo santo are in Ecuador, but other regions have small populations. If you don’t know where your palo santo is coming from, it could be from one of these tiny populations where improper harvesting could erase that specific, regional group of palo santo." - https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/16/style/self-care/palo-santo-wood-endangered.html

SUN 07 JUL19 - A MUST WATCH VIDEO! - 'Which Country Will YOU Most Likely Become a Victim of a Crime? MUST WATCH!'

SUN 07 JUL19 - A MUST WATCH VIDEO! - 'RAMM' = 'Retire Abroad Media Magazine'

-I have corresponded with and followed Frank & Angie's work over the years, they are a very honest, & savvy couple. I believe they first arrived in Cuenca in about 2010, it was certainly a different atmosphere and vibe nearly a decade ago.

Frank & Angie lived in Cuenca for several years until recently shoving on to Italy and other destinations: 'Frank and Angie Travel & Live Abroad' - 'Which Country Will YOU Most Likely Become a Victim of a Crime? MUST WATCH!'

--Stage 1...The Beginning Stages of the Gringo Vicious Cycle- "Certain areas like Cuenca are promoted by the 'Retire Abroad Media Magazine' = 'RAMM' and their groups at a very low cost of living to get people excited to go visit, retire or move to the places."

--Stage 2... of the Vicious Cycle--

The expat bubble grows and grows and the places being promoted become more expensive, slowly pushing out the locals and expats with smaller pensions. Various crimes against foreigners increase.

<<Cause and Effect>>

Stage 3... of the Vicious Cycle--
You will see an increase of petty crime, home invasions, ie: Prowling, Robbery, especially in expat enclaves. Increase of violent crimes against foreigners and even tourists with drink spikings, sexual assaults in resorts. There will be an uprise in street Muggings and multiple Crime Scams, etc...

--Stage 3.5... Continuation of Gringo Vicious Cycle--

...because the RAMM keeps upping the cost of living in their promotions, wealthier income levels flock into the area, paying higher and higher prices for everything,.. while on the sidelines the majority of the locals arte getting pushed out...

--Stage 4... of Gringo Vicious Cycle--

With the increase in crimes and higher prices, many expats flee, some of them leaving behind property they can't sell. Tourism also slows down...but only a new set of expats get lured by the RAMMs once again and the vicious cycle starts all over again.
It’s called the “Gringo or Expat Vicious Cycle”.

HOLIDAY SEASON SAFETY AND SECURITY - Thu 12/6/2018

ACSQuito@state.gov - Thu 12/6/2018, 9:16 AM
HOLIDAY SEASON SAFETY AND SECURITY ADVISORY
The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that holiday celebrations in Ecuador are already underway and continue through the end of the year. During this time, you should remain particularly vigilant due to a seasonal surge in crime.
Additionally, the threat of street crime (e.g., purse snatchings, pickpockets) is high in areas where there are large crowds. U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security during the holiday season.

Below are some tips to be safe and to help you reduce your vulnerability during this holiday season:
In your home:
• Beware of strangers posing as representatives of charitable organizations, police officers, or other solicitors. They may be casing your house.
• Never automatically open the door or gate of your home. Always verify the identity of visitors through an optical viewer, intercom, or a window from which you cannot be observed. If you know the person, ensure that no strangers might be forcing them to have the door opened.
• Be aware of persons loitering on your street or in your neighborhood. They may be criminals conducting surveillance. Call the police if you're suspicious of a loiterer.
• Make a habit of keeping doors double locked (dead bolted) even when you are in the house.
• If you have one, get in the habit of setting your alarm, even when you are at home.
• Don't place holiday gifts where they can be seen from outside the home.
If you are going to be away for the holidays:
• Strictly limit the number of people who know of your intention to leave your residence vacant overnight. Be careful of disclosing travel plans to domestic employees.
• Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to check on your house occasionally, making sure your house keeps a "somebody's at home" look.
In your car:
• Drive defensively. The number of drunk drivers greatly increases during the holidays.
• Always drive with your windows up and doors locked, especially in city traffic.
• Wear your seat belt and ensure small children are secured in size-appropriate safety seats properly mounted in the rear seat of your vehicle.
• Carry your cell phone with you whenever you are traveling by car, no matter how short the journey. In the event of an accident, your cell phone is your lifeline to emergency medical assistance and security support.
• Don't leave valuables in your vehicle – in the seat or in the trunk. Return home to drop off your purchases rather than leave them in the car.
• Be careful returning home from shopping. A vehicle full of gifts is a target for a follow-home robbery.
• When in crawling or stopped traffic, leave at least a half car length between you and the car ahead to allow space to exit rapidly, if necessary.
Attending/hosting holiday parties:
• Do not drink and drive.
• If you are hosting a party, arrange alternate transportation for intoxicated guests.
• If you are attending a party, know your safe drink limit. If you exceed it, call a radio taxi or ask someone to drive you home.
• Do not hail a taxi on the street.
While shopping:
• Remember exactly where you parked your car. Make a mental note or write it down if necessary. Wandering around a parking garage or parking lot is an invitation for trouble.
• When shopping, carry only as many bags as you can comfortably control. Ensure that nothing can be easily snatched from your grasp. Do not bring bags to your car in order to make a second trip for shopping.
• Your wallet, keys, and cell phone should be in a secure location, and you should be especially wary of pickpockets. Have your keys out and ready as you approach your vehicle. Someone fumbling for keys with an armload of packages is a prime target for a mugging or carjacking.
• Be alert to your surroundings. If someone is watching you too closely, is following you, or is loitering near your vehicle, return to the store or contact the police and request help. Criminals often work in teams in order to divert a victim’s attention. Be wary of anyone who attempts to draw your attention away from your belongings and surroundings.
• If you're paying cash for your purchases, don't show any more cash than is necessary. Split up your money into different pockets.
• Keep just the credit cards you routinely use in your wallet. Keep any unused cards out of your wallet and in a safe place.

Happy Holidays!!
